What is an SSL Certificate?

A Secure Socket Layer (SSL) Certificate was developed in 1996 by Netscape, and is now the most recommended method of secure data transfer online. SSL Certificates are integrated in most web browsers and servers, and use key encryption to protect your data.

To use the secure connection, the protocol of SSL requires the server to have an SSL Certificate installed, which is a digital, electronic file on the server that identifies unique users and servers. They work as a digital passport that establishes the SSL secure session once it is authenticated.

Many users recognise the padlock in the address bar in secure websites, which reassures them that the site is secure before they input their details, such as credit card information. Users are often put off when they can’t see the padlock, so SSLs often help to gain more sales. Once you install an SSL Certificate on your domain, users will see the padlock and be reassured that it’s secure to enter their details.

The QuickSSL Premium is more expensive, but has more features. It comes with a unique banner with a timestamp for your site. These help to show your users that the site is secure.

The TrueBusiness ID with EV certificate puts the well known ‘Green Bar’ on your domain. This SSL certificate makes the user’s address bar green (depending on their browser), to ensure security. This SSL certificate requires you to send ID and company documentation to GeoTrust before they’ll issue the certificate.
